Remodelling, adding history to your new ring

For many Aussies, engagement rings in Australia symbolise the moment in time where two lovers choose to take their relationship to the next level. For those with a strong familial connection, there is the possibility of remodelling an heirloom to accentuate a ring with a princess cut diamond. Not only will this create a truly unique design, it will also add some personal history to the piece.

The process begins by creating a design. A number of aspects will make up the final design of the new ring including the style of jewellery you normally wear, as well as the budget. Keep in mind that while some of the costs can be reduced by providing the stones and metal to be reused, the process is quite labour intensive.

While many elements can be repurposed for the new ring, there are still many limitations. With an older piece, it is very difficult to know what alloys are used to make up the gold. There is a small chance of catastrophic changes during the melting process. While it may not appear obvious in the short term, the metal in the band may become porous leading to discolouration and cracking as dirt gets caught in it.

Stones in older rings can occasionally be reused and are generally set to the sides of a new stone. When opting to reuse older stones, a jeweller’s keen eye will help select those with a similar shine and brilliance to any newer stones in the piece.

Remodelling an existing ring can be quite a delicate process, and not all pieces can be repurposed as desired. Stones may be worn and damaged, and some metals can not be melted down for reuse. Working alongside your local jeweller, you will be kept advised of the possibilities for remodelling as well as the risks.
