What kind of earrings should guys wear?
Aside from men’s wedding rings, pendants and classy watches, earrings have also been generating a lot of buzz in men’s fashion nowadays.
Wearing earrings as a man has always been deemed unconventional. If you’re a fella who’s been sporting earrings for quite a while now, you’re most probably familiar with the occasional scoffing here and there.
But fairly recently, more and more lads have been adding earrings to their wardrobe, making earrings a rather revolutionary addition to men’s fashion.
There are various types of men’s earrings you can wear depending on the look you’d like to pull off. Want something that will complement your formal evening attire? There’s a classy pair for that. Attending a heavy metal concert? There’s a set that can complete your rock-and-roll getup!
Not to mistake with other ear piercings, earrings strictly refer to jewellery worn on the lobe or the edge of the ear. Read on for a list of different kinds of men’s earrings.
Studs
Stud earrings are debatably the most common type worn by men, as they are the easiest choice. They give a free-floating impression on the ear, as the stud is connected with a metal rod that unnoticeably penetrates through the lobe.
With the ladies having a range of stud earring styles (e.g. diamond and pearl earrings), there’s a variety of popular men’s designs to choose from as well, including circles and crosses.
A little tip: since stud earrings come in different shapes and designs, make sure that you choose a pair that matches both the occasion and your outfit.
Hoops
This kind of earrings has been around since who knows when.
Even Shakespeare has them.
Hoop earrings can be either circular or semi-circular and are attached to a thin wire that is pierced through the ear lobe.
Silver and black hoops have always been on trend, and it will probably take a long while before they go out of style.
Barbell
Its name is based on the piece of weightlifting equipment we all know of. A barbell earring takes form as a metal rod with a sphere attached to each end.
To put it on, one of the orbs is removed to enable the rod for insertion. Once it’s affixed into the piercing, the orb is reattached to keep the piece in place.
There are two types of barbell earrings men usually sport—straight barbells (those with a straight rod) and curved barbells (those with a curved bar). Aside from the ear lobes, these are frequently worn in other ear piercings as well.
Spacers or plugs
Not for the fainthearted! Spacers also go by other names such as plugs, gaps and flesh tunnels. These are pieces with thicker cylinders that pierce through the lobes. Usually, wearers gradually get bigger spacers until their earlobes stretch to the size they want.
Ideally, you wait two to four months between every ‘stretch’ to ensure the piercing is fully healed and ready to make room for bigger earrings. But you should bear in mind that greatly gauged earlobes will call for medical procedures—including surgery and topical medication—in order to shrink or close up.
While men’s earrings still aren’t regarded favourably in different community rules and company dress codes, they’ve generally lost their controversial status, as their present-day omnipresence speaks of them as accessories of masculinity and style.
