Can I request a custom cut diamond in my ring?
Designing a custom engagement ring in Sydney is – to some at least – the ultimate display of love. It shows that you have a deep understanding of your partner’s wants and needs; that you know them intimately, and trust yourself to design a piece of jewellery that they’ll wear forever.
But when we talk about designing custom jewellery in Sydney we’re usually just talking about designing the band, and choosing a stone from a predetermined selection. But what if you wanted to design the cut of the diamond too?
There are two questions that need to be asked here, and we’ll endeavour to answer both.
Can I request a custom cut diamond in my ring?
It is technically possible, although there are very few customer-facing businesses who offer this as a service. And because the demand for custom cut diamonds is low, the price is generally high.
But perhaps the more prudent question to ask is…
Should I design a custom cut diamond?
The answer to this question, unless you’re a trained professional with a deep knowledge of how light interacts with a diamond, is probably no. The most popular diamond shapes like round cut, princess cut and cushion cut are popular because they have been honed over decades to offer the greatest amount of light refraction. This is what gives a diamond its shimmer. If you play with the formula of these cuts too much, the diamond will go from bright and sparkling to dull and boring. These cuts also waste less of the diamond to offcuts, lowering the price.
The most popular diamond cuts are popular for a reason. While the idea of a diamond cut into your fiancé-to-be’s initials may seem cute, the reality will likely be disappointing. It’s wiser to stick to the classics and make your mark with a beautifully designed band.
