4 of the most famous pieces of jewellery in history
Society has become fascinated with diamonds. It became a sign of status, a symbol of love and a statement for fashion.
Throughout history, jewellery has been iconic—from the breathtaking halo engagement rings of the royals to the extravagant pieces adorned by celebrities. Here are some of the most famous pieces of jewellery in history.
L’incomparable diamond necklace
The L’Incomparable necklace was created by Lebanese jeweller Mouawad. It’s known as the world’s largest internally flawless diamond of more than 407 carats.
Its surrounded by 91 white diamonds on a rose gold chain and arranged in an asymmetrical design that resembles the leaves of a vine.
The centrepiece diamond was found by chance in a discarded pile of mining rubble by a young girl in the African Congo in the 1980s.
La peregrina pearl necklace
La Peregrina or the “Wandering Pearl” was found by an African slave on the coast of the Isle of Santa Margarita in the Gulf of Panama. And it was the largest pearl discovered during that time, weighing in at 55.95 carats or 223.8 grains.
This jewellery dazzles with an array of rubies and diamonds and it’s one of the most magnificent pieces of jewellery that has ever been crafted.
The hope diamond
The Hope Diamond is a 45.52-carat steel blue gem that was found in India. This fancy deep greyish blue stone with VS1 clarity is also the largest blue diamond in the world.
Besides its uncommon weight and colour, the Hope Diamond has been plagued with rumours of being cursed for years. The mythology of the jeweller claims that misfortune and tragedy will befall anyone who owns or wears the diamond.
Although, the curse is believed to be a fabrication devised by salesmen to increase the popularity and value of the gem, but it’s mysterious beauty still fascinates people all over the world today.
The Graff pink ring
The Graff Pink is a 24.78-carat pink diamond, which is considered as one of the rarest gemstones in the world. Its colour is caused by how the stone absorbs the light in an unusual way when it was being developed.
But in 2010, when Laurence Graff purchased the stone, he reshaped the diamond and removed 20 natural flaws before renaming it “The Graff Pink”. This stone is now the most flawless pink diamond in the world.
The Graff Pink is now mounted in a ring and is set between two shield-shaped diamonds. It was the most expensive gem ever sold at auction before until it was taken over by the Blue Moon of Josephine in 2015.
