What is the best clarity for diamond earrings?

You might think that there’s not much difference when shopping for engagement rings and diamond earrings. Well, there are actually a few different factors to prioritise and consider when shopping for either of these.

diamond

True, having a visibly clean and clear diamond for your earrings is important. But keep in mind that diamond studs are at a much farther viewing distance. Therefore, clarity isn’t always the deciding factor when buying earrings.

Compared to custom engagement rings from Sydney, diamond clarity for earrings isn’t as particular. Rather, other aspects from the 4Cs criteria should be prioritised for you to get the best value for your money.

Prioritising among the 4Cs

As mentioned, although diamond clarity contributes to the overall beauty and sparkle of your jewellery, it’s not the most important aspect of the diamond. It’s best to go through the 4Cs criteria and determine which factor should be prioritised.

Cut

The diamond cut will bring out the brilliance and shine of a jewellery piece. Even for engagement rings, weight is often sacrificed for brilliance.

After all, the defining quality of a good diamond is in its sparkle.

Carat

Since the size of the jewellery is the most noticeable part, it’s also common to prioritise the carat weight of your diamond. Although, weight alone is not always the ideal guide for choosing diamonds.

Clarity

Earrings aren’t usually seen at a very close distance. You don’t have to be too meticulous with the clarity of the diamond because chances are, no one’s going to notice those barely-visible imperfections anyway.

Colour

Ideally, the best colour grade for your diamond earrings is ranging from D to H, which is colourless to near colourless, respectively. But then again, since they’re placed in your ears, unless the diamond is really big, a slight change in colour will not show drastic differences.

According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), there are six categories to grade the clarity of a diamond piece – Flawless (FL), Internally Flawless (IF), Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2), Very Slightly Included (VS1, and VS2), Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) and Included (I1 and I2).

A safe choice for your diamond earrings would be around FL to VS2. Sometimes, you can even push it to S1 or S2 if the diamond isn’t too big.

In the end, the look, clarity, colour, cut and style of your diamond earring is still up to your own personal taste. So, you do you.
