How to clean and polish tarnished silver


The event is three days away. Clothes, shoes, and bag are set. Hairstyle? Check. Everything's well-organised except for one thing, your jewellery.

You open your jewellery box then you start to panic for all you see are your tarnished silver jewellery from jewellers in Bondi. You start to panic because you don't know what to do.

Here are five simple item you can use to clean and polish tarnished silver.

Silver polish

Add a little amount of silver polish on a clean cloth. Knead the cloth on your silver in an up and down motion. Abstain wiping in a round motion to avoid creating small scratch mark on your silver.

Make use of the alternate sides of your cloth as you wipe to ensure that the removed tarnish won't come in contact with your silver. Then clean it with warm water then polish it with fabric for it ti shimmer.

Soap and water

Prepare a dish soap, warm water, and a clean and soft fabric. Add a few drop of dish soap in a basin of warm water, Mix it well. Dip your fabric in the mixture then, rub it on the silver. Wash if afterwards with cool water, and gently polish it with your fabric.

Baking soda and water

Mix baking soda and water together until it forms a paste. Place a small amount of your baking soda and water mixture on a piece of fabric then begin polishing your silver. You can also use a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove cracks. Rinse the mixture off your silver with warm water then dry with a clean fabric.

White vinegar and baking soda

Mix together half cup of white vinegar and two teaspoons of baking soda into a container. Stir the two ingredients well until you see a bubbling reaction. Put your silver in the container with the mixture. Let it sit for two to three hours.

After the set time, get your silver. Clear away the vinegar and baking soda residue by washing it properly under cool running water. Make sure to dry off before storing it.

Olive oil and lemon juice

Pour one teaspoon of lemon juice with 1/2 cup instant dry milk and 1 1/2 cups if water in a glass container. Avoid using metallic or stainless steels bowls and containers to ensure no chemical reactions will be formed.

Put your silver in the mixture and let it stay overnight. Then wash with it cool water. Use a soft cloth to dry.
