How to care for pearl jewellery
Pearls have a captiviting lustre and classic which is perfect for pearl rings, necklace and earrings. They're resilient and are meant to be frequently worn. But they're also delicate in a way and need proper care.
To keep the pearl's lustre to last longer, proper care, storage, and cleaning are essential.
How to take care of pearls
Pearls are the most natural gemstones that's vulnerable to acid and alkaline. To preserve its radiance, avoid letting them come in contact with beauty products, such as hairspray or perfume.
It's advisable to apply your makeup and perfume first. Then wash your hands before putting in your pearl jewellery as a finishing touch. After using it, wipe the pearls with a damp, clean, and soft cloth using water only to remove any residual perspiration which would eat away the layers of nacre of the stone.
Do not try to wear a strand of pearls when its string is still wet from being cleaned. Its silk will stretch and will leave unsightly gaps between the pearls. Also, avoid wearing them with clothes made of rough fabric as they may cause scratches.
How to store pearls
Pearls are durable and shock -resistant. But it can be scratches when it comes in close contact with sharp objects or other kinds of gemstones. Don't leave them in a security box for long periods of time as it may cause your precious pearls to dehydrate.
When they're not being worn, place them in silk or chamois leather to preserve its lustre. If they're kept in sealed plastic bags or safes. the nacre will eventually turn yellow and the surface of the pearl will crack.
They should not be stored in a hanging position, it will make the strand stretch and will reduce the strength and elasticity of the thread. If you want to be extra careful, it's advisable to have your pearls jewellery restrung once a year.
How to clean pearls
Pearls should never be cleaned in an ultrasonic machine because it could shatter them. Never use a toothbrush or scourging pads to remove a piece of dirt on your pearl jewellery. Instead, you can rub them with your fingernails alone.
Cleaning materials like detergents, bleaches, powered cleaners, baking soda, talcum powder milk, and dish-washing liquid contain ammonia , which can damage the pearls.
It's not advisable to leave pearls in cleaning solutions for too long as it can remove too much layers of nacre found in them. As a result, you might get a nasty surprise.
Pearl cleaning is a delicate process. It's best to be cleaned by experts or a reliable jeweller.
