Alternative metals – a new look for a timeless piece
Men’s wedding rings have generally had a similar look about them which has lasted the test of time. The ring tends to be a wide, solid band of metal with an occasional stone to complement or contrast the bride’s wedding jewellery. In the past, these have normally been crafted from gold, silver or platinum. While the look has remained, there are new materials making their ways onto grooms’ fingers on that special day.
Titanium – Found throughout the world, titanium has its foundations in industrial applications making it one of the most resilient metals for wedding rings. Titanium’s popularity has increased over time however, due to it being a lightweight metal when compared to other precious metals. Titanium is a versatile choice for wedding jewellery, as it is available in a variety of colours and finishes and has the added advantage of being hypoallergenic.
Cobalt – Another hypoallergenic metal, cobalt was created for the aerospace and medical industries. Cobalt rings have a bright white shine to them, making for an alternative to platinum. In addition to the colour, cobalt rings are around four times harder than platinum rings – a factor which makes them long-lasting.
Tungsten – An incredibly strong metal, tungsten is approximately four times harder than platinum. While this makes for a durable and low maintenance ring, a tungsten ring can not be resized. Tungsten provides a unique colour for wedding bands, allowing to create a unique look.
Stainless Steel – Stainless steel rings have grown in popularity in modern times. A stainless-steel ring is a more affordable alternative to other precious metals, without sacrificing durability. In addition to being a sturdy metal, it can be polished to different degrees. Lightly polished stainless steel creates a matte look, similar to a pewter ring, while a highly polished ring can have the shine of chrome.
