7 intimate and personal proposal ideas

So you’ve purchased your radiant cut engagement ring in Sydney and are ready to drop down on one knee. But while proposals featuring flash mobs, basketball big screens and concert stages might be perfect viral video fodder, the reality is that the majority of people want something far more intimate.

So how do you pop the question in a personal and meaningful way? Let’s take a look at seven awesome ideas.

  • Literally ‘pop’ the question: Your partner comes home, and sitting on the bed is a helium balloon with a question mark on it. Your partner pops the balloon, and out falls a note. ‘Will you marry me?’

  • Back to where it all began: Relive your first date, doing everything that you did the first time you shared each other’s company in a romantic setting. When the champagne is popped or the dessert is served, bring out the ring.

  • Create a scrapbook: Print out pictures of your time together, starting from the beginning through to today, and place them in a scrapbook or photo album. In the last page write four simple words – will you marry me?

  • Get out in nature: You don’t have to stay indoors for your proposal to be intimate. Choose a beautiful, quiet piece of local nature – perhaps a sunset spot or a place close to the water – and let the landscape create the perfect mood.

  • A weekend away: If you can’t splurge on your proposal, when can you? Get away from it all by visiting a beautiful bed and breakfast for the weekend or hiring a sailboat overnight, and pop the question over dinner.

  • Relive your partner’s childhood: Take them back to where their life began. Does your partner have a particularly fond childhood memory at a certain place? Take them back to their youth, and then offer them a future with you!

  • Do it with food: What’s your partner’s favourite food? Depending on the answer, you can either make the food part of the proposal (hiding the ring in the pudding, for example) or simply serve up a beautiful dinner and get down on one knee at the end.
