Why do diamonds remain the ultimate romantic gesture?

Diamonds have long been a symbol of romance, dating back to the 15th century when the first engagement ring was bestowed by the Archduke Maximillian of Austria to his beloved as a symbol of his promise to wed her. Since then, the diamond has fast maintained its popularity over history - especially within jewellery stores in Sydney - due to its status as the ultimate romantic gesture. Here are some of the reasons why the beautiful diamond has maintained its popularity:

Long-lasting

There is nothing that ties together the wonderful nature of a love to last a lifetime, then something that will last even longer. The diamond is the second hardest natural mineral on earth – only losing its spot to the recently discovered wurtzite boron, which contains a structure similar to diamonds and only differing by a few key minerals. The diamond is measured on the highest level of the Mohs’ hardness test – measuring a 10 out of 10. This means that exactly like the diamond purchased as a testament of your love, is sure to last many lifetimes.

Beauty

There is no doubt that the glittering white diamond is indeed one of the most beautiful and timeless gemstones in existence. The quality of the diamond and glittering shine has meant that the diamond has maintained its popularity throughout history. Additionally, the beauty of the diamond resides in the fact that it is an extremely high quality.

Status

With a history that dates back to ancient royalty, the diamond has long been a status symbol to elevate the elite. First historical documentations records the diamond being used in India as a way to separate not only royalty but different classes – as only certain classes were privileged to wear only certain colours of the diamonds. When the De Beers organisation achieved control of diamond supply in the early 1900’s – they popularised the use of diamonds in engagement rings in particular. They coined the rule of two months wage to be used for any ring purchase during the great depression with their famous marketing campaign which used the slogan “Diamonds are forever”. A sentiment that has held true to this very day.
