How long does a custom engagement ring take to make?

So you’re looking to surprise your fiancé-to-be with a custom engagement ring, and you want to know how long you need to give your jeweller to make it. Good question.

How long is a piece of string? That’s obviously not the answer you were hoping for, but it’s as close to the truth as you’ll come. When it comes to creating custom engagement ring in Sydney, every jeweller will be different.

There are many factors that will affect the amount of time it will take for your jewellery to be produced. Firstly, you need to get a design together, which requires collaboration between you and the jeweller. Secondly, you may find yourself in a custom jewellery queue. It could be that you’ve hit the jeweller at a busy time of the year – around Christmas or Valentine’s Day, for example – and need to wait for other pieces to be made before yours. Essentially, it could take far longer than any timeframe quoted here.

Many jewellers advise that if the process runs perfectly smoothly, you could expect your custom piece back within 2-3 weeks. But very rarely does it proceed unhalted. This isn’t usually the jeweller’s fault – more often the customer will be the hold-up as they try to decide whether they’re happy with the design, or are trying to work out which size they need the ring to be.

In short, while you may well get your ring designed and produced within a couple of weeks, it’s far wiser to leave a couple of months. This allows you wriggle room to really think through the design, and to become comfortable with your choice. As with many things in life, it’s best to be on the safe side.
