Which type of stone should you choose for your engagement?

To many, an engagement ring gemstone isn’t even a question. You’re supposed to get a diamond, right? Why would you bother with anything else?

The truth is that there are a wealth of other options available that may be an even better choice for your bride to be. From amethyst to sapphire engagement rings in Sydney, let’s take a look at a few of the lesser known stone options.

Diamonds aren’t just white. They come in a full range of colours, each with a slightly different physical or chemical composition that effects the hue. Yellow diamonds are the most common fancy colour, and can make for a stunning statement when set in white gold.

The deep blue hue that is synonymous with sapphire has meant that it’s been regarded as one of the most desirable gemstones for centuries. If it’s good enough for Princess Diana and Princess Kate, it’s good enough for your fiancé!

The light purple/lavender colour of amethyst is a stunning engagement ring choice. With a hardness rating of 7 of the Mohs scale it’s terrifically durable, and the more lightly hued stones are just as stunning as the deeper ones.

Many people are surprised to find out that rubies are simply red sapphires. This makes them one of the hardest gemstones available (after diamonds). A symbol of love and passion, a ruby can be a real statement piece for those with deep enough pockets.

From Cleopatra to Elizabeth Taylor, the deep green of an emerald has sent hearts aflutter for millennia. Because emeralds aren’t as rugged as most other gemstones, it’s important to carefully inspect the stones upon purchase, to ensure there are no cracks or dramatic inclusions.
