Finding the right ring for your skin tone
Just as different coloured outfits seem to work on different people, different jewellery will also suit different skin tones. So, for those shopping for a custom made engagement ring for their partner, which metals and gemstones will work with which skin?
It’s important to first understand that when we talk skin tone, we’re not talking colour. Skin tone can be divided into two main categories – cool and warm. Dark skin can just as easily fall into either category as pale skin can, so it’s important to first identify which tone you are. One of the easiest ways to work out skin tone is to look at the veins on the inside of your forearm – if they look blue, you’re most likely cool toned; if they look green, you’re warm toned.
The majority of people will fall into the cool toned category. For these people, metals that have a similar tone are ideal. Platinum, silver and white gold will look stunning when held against this type of skin, as will such gemstones as sapphire, ruby, emerald, opal, amethyst and aquamarine.
Classic yellow gold or romantic rose gold engagement rings look absolutely stunning on those who enjoy a warm skin tone. Similarly warm-hued gemstones will also look fantastic, with the likes of yellow diamonds, garnet, alexandrite, and morganite working with the skin beautifully.
Some people will fail to fall into either of these categories. And for these people, there’s only one word you need to remember – diamonds. Because of their natural neutrality, diamonds look great on all skin, no matter the tone!
