Questions to ask your custom jeweller
Purchasing custom jewellery in Sydney isn’t exactly like buying your weekly groceries. It’s a process that many of us will only do once, so it can be tricky to know which questions to ask your jeweller.
Whether you’re designing a custom engagement ring, or are looking for a piece to commemorate a special event, here are some questions that are wise to ask of your custom jeweller.
The most obvious question is that of cost. It’s important to establish whether the custom piece that you’re hoping to create is able to be done at the price that you’re hoping. If it’s not, you’ll either have to shop around, or rethink your design.
If your piece of jewellery is time-sensitive (perhaps you’re going to propose to your partner on holiday), you need to know that you’ll be receiving it in time. Always try to leave a buffer period of a few weeks, just in case things don’t turn out as you’d expected.
A good jeweller will do all their work onsite. This will allow you to check in on progress, and will make any alterations that you require far easier to handle.
Gemstones are relatively easy to counterfeit, especially if you’re selling them to untrained eyes. Be sure to use a reputable jeweller who displays their certifications proudly. Any gemstones should come with a certificate of authenticity or similar certification.
What happens to your design after it’s created? Most jewellers will retain the rights to it, although the best jewellers won’t use it again out of principle. In the same way, the best jewellers will not be comfortable in copying another jeweller’s work.
