Diamonds come in all shapes and sizes. But some of these shapes are more popular than others! Here are the four most popular diamond ring shapes, and the reasons why they sit at the top of the pile.

The classic round cut diamond is a shape that has never – and it appear will never – go out of fashion. The round cut accounts for over 70% of all cut diamonds. There are many reasons that this is the case.

Firstly, the round cut allows the greatest amount of diamond to be extracted from an uncut stone, maximising profits. Secondly, the round cut is so symmetrical that it produces more ‘shimmer’ (the amount of light that is reflected back to your eyes) than any other of the diamond cuts. Thirdly, its circular shape is simply timeless. It will go out of fashion when circles go out of fashion.

The second most popular diamond shape and one that is synonymous with offers of engagement is the princess cut. A square version of the round cut, its shimmer is almost as bright.

The princess cut was only invented in the 60s as a way to extract the greatest amount of diamond from an uncut stone but has since become incredibly popular. Be sure to buy one that is set in a way that covers the corners, however, as they are very sharp.

The rise of retro fashion and the appearance of cushion cut engagement rings on some celebrity fingers has helped to make the cushion cut diamond the third most popular diamond shape in recent years.

Also known as the pillow cut, cushion cut diamonds have the loosest rules when it comes to the cutting style, and as such will display a varying amount of shimmer, depending on how each was cut.

If you’re alert you may realise that the emerald-cut wasn’t developed for diamonds at all, but rather for their green gemstone cousins. That doesn’t mean the emerald cut isn’t a great choice for diamonds too, though. In fact, it’s one of the most popular!

The emerald cut offers huge facets, creating a ‘hall of mirrors’ effect. Worn by the likes of Kate Hudson, this cut has exploded over recent years. It makes any diamond even more of a statement piece.
